Manzanas, Cocodrilos, and Leyendas

What we've been doing...

... with Kindies and Firsties...

Activities in Spanish have followed what the students are doing in science, with students learning about the parts and life cycle of apples.   We've explored apple vocabulary through crafts, and many of the first grade students can read familiar phrases.

... with Twos, Threes, and Fours...

Second, third, or fourth grade students acted out plays of a short film that we watched and narrated in class.  The short film allowed us to practice the word "dice," which means he or she says.

Ask students to tell you about the skits.

... and with Fives and Sixes.

Students in the fifth and sixth grades read an ancient Aztec story called The Legend of the Marigold.  We talked about how this story is foundational to the Aztec religion and how ancient people created stories to help them make sense of the world around them.  The Aztecs were polytheistic (we didn't use this word - we just said they had many gods) and we talked a bit about how polytheism exists in many parts of the world, most notably India.  Indigenous religions have been (mostly) replaced by Christianity, but many people in Mexico pray to some of the Aztec gods even today.

Ask your student to tell you the legend!
